The original picture inspired me to see the beauty found in various sources and you never know where the road of life will take you.

Alberta Roads, oh Alberta Roads!

So many beautiful places, so much daily existence. My approach to the subject is to show my daily dose of Alberta Roads.

Whispers in the Solstice Woods

It is the shortest day of the year today. Alberta woods surround me. It is silent, as if the world has paused. Do I hear whispers from the past or an intake of breath, an anticipation of things to come? The path splits. I take a narrow trail today. Trails join, diverge and meet again. They can take me deeper into the woods, to the river or back home. It is my choice.

OPEN FIELDS: Open fields, big blue skies, the multitude of colours, and the dance of it all when the wind blows. They calm my soul, centre me,  and make me happy.

Thank you for the opportunity to participate! Seeing Quilt #5’s prairie field and hay bale just pushed all the buttons for this prairie girl!! Growing up in Saskatchewan, whether taking country drives on gravel roads or flying over the rural areas, the golden fields and the giants overlooking the land are a part of my soul. With great sadness we see those giants fall, and the collection of photos over the years continue to inspire the quilted versions of grain elevators that appear under my sewing needle. With fabrics from my “collection” I was able to add another lost era of giants quilt.

Inspired by Quilt #6 with the sole image of the ‘Giant’ grain elevator, (which have been slowly disappearing from our prairie landscapes) reminded me of the changes affecting our rural areas. It brought to mind my mother who left the farm post WWII to attend university in the city. Along with the grain elevator (ghosted in the background) also disappearing were the Dayliners which serviced our small urban centres, and train stations sitting unused.

Inspired by Quilt #7’s Artist Statement where she spoke about the erosion of our prairie landscape, I immediately thought of the ghost town juxtaposed next to the Big City Skyline. I have also been thinking about our current situation with the COVID 19 Virus, and how that will affect our future, as I stitch this piece. Currently our towns and cities resemble ghost towns, and the city skyline is a hope for what the future holds. Something big and bright, and exciting.

Due to the current lockdown situation with this Virus, I have not only had the challenge of envisioning and executing this piece, but also of finding fabrics and threads that would work to portray my idea, since I couldn’t just run over to the quilt store and pick something up that would work.

This quilt is also symbolic of my quilting journey. I started out in a small way doing traditional quilts, and with this piece, and others recently, I have journeyed across the road to trying my hand at something more artistic and free flowing. It still has its ties to the traditional, but is pulling me over into a New Era.

Quilter #8 interpreted the city skyline as hope for what the future holds. Building on that, my personal hope is that we can move quickly into a post-Covid 19 world where we can gather and touch, and feel the joy of community. To quote a favorite song, “It’s a new dawn, it’s a new world, it’s a new life for me, and I’m feeling good”.

Whispers of Country and City

From Kathy’s piece I took the meadow and the city skyline.

The beauty of the evening sky whispers at sunset while being enjoyed both in the city as well as the peaceful country side. I watch the geese in flight from my deck as the sun sets for another day.
