As participant #1 of a 9-person team, I was given and original photography (by Greg Marney) as

inspiration to create my piece. The rich harvest gold tones of the close-cropped fields against the Alberta big blue sky provided plenty of inspiration for my modernized version. A straight-line drawing of the original photo was created into a foundation paper pieced pattern. Densely machine quilted straight lines, through a double layer of batting, creates the illusion of furrows in the fields. Additional machine quilting was added to the wide binding to create a final frame.

As participant #2, I received Kim Caskey’s interpretation of Fields of Gold. The title and Kim’s quilt said farmers’ fields to me and I thought no field was complete without some rolls of hay. I digitized the hay for my embroidery machine and stitched it out in multiple sizes. The idea of using the chenille technique for the fields came from a farm quilt that I saw at a quilt show a couple of years ago. Some of the chenille was also done with the embroidery machine. A few extra rows of stitching were quilted to attach the layers together.

This prairie girl has many memories of brilliant yellow canola blossoms waving under a big  Alberta sky.   Summers of my childhood were marked by photos in canola fields, and my first summers as a newlywed viewed the canola from my kitchen window.

My piece, “You Raise Me Up”, depicts one of the first images I witnessed when I first arrived in Alberta in August 2000. The sky was big and blue, the canola fields were in full bloom, and the abandoned grain elevator dominated the horizon. I utilized curved piecing, raw edge applique, thread painting and machine quilting.

My quilt reflects my emotions, when I hear the song, “Your Raise Me Up”, by Josh Groban. This song takes me back to Long Beach, on Vancouver Island - and the emotions evoked when I first walked out from the canopy of trees - seeing the magnificent expanse of sand, sea and sky. This is certainly where the angels sing.

What came to mind was a beautiful glowing sunset and the first few lines of the poem "Salutation to the Dawn".  "Look to this Day! for it is life, the very life of life". As a teenager, we recited the poem at my Canadian Girls in Training camp right at sunrise.  When the sun comes up and begins to "shine,” our spirits are lifted as we start another day. I love painting sunrises and added more natural beauty with a lake, mountains, trees and flowers bringing together "The Dawning of a New Day."

I was inspired by Janet’s quilt “The Dawning of a New Day”.

My favorite time of day is dawn and my favorite landscape must include water. I have spent many hours at the lake, early in the morning, just sitting and enjoying the peace and quiet that surrounds me. If I go on a beach vacation, on the last day, I get up early and go down to the beach to enjoy the tranquility of the water. The water is my happy place!

Inspired by the whisper of Myrna’s art quilt ‘Dawn’s Early Light’, nature’s beauty also inspires me, brings me peace and calm. Watching the sun come up over the pond, is a daily affirmation. As grandmother earth takes time to heal, the water clears and vegetation and animals grow healthier, and each new sunrise brings light into our lives, I am grateful.
